A. Michelle Canter practices primarily in the firm’s lending litigation and regulatory enforcement practice, focusing particularly on class actions, loss mitigation and mortgage fraud claims. Michelle routinely defends regulatory enforcement and investigatory actions by state regulators, HUD, Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, the SEC and the EEOC and similar agencies. Michelle has also developed an expertise in RESPA compliance and servicing best practices. Michelle is active on GREFPAC committees and is a member of the MBA's Fraud and Ethics Working Group. Michelle worked as a creditor’s rights lawyer for ten years before joining the firm in October 2002.  She began her career with a banking and bankruptcy boutique firm in her native Kansas.  Following her love of politics, Michelle relocated to Austin and joined the Texas Bankers Association as legal counsel and registered lobbyist.  Michelle graduated in 1992 with Dean’s Honors from Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas, where she served as an Associate Editor of the Washburn Law Journal, participated on the Moot Court National Team, and was selected for Order of Barristers.  Michelle received her undergraduate degree from the University of Kansas in 1989. At KU, Michelle was active in campus activities, as well as a member of the Lamda Sigma Sophomore Honor Society and Order of Omega.  Michelle is admitted to practice in Georgia, Texas, and Kansas.
